Now, I use a few trusted tour aggregators through which to recommend tours on this travel blog, but despite roughly equal clicks across all of them, Get Your Guide is the one that my readers book significantly more with, so I can only assume this is the tour site they trust most!
Luckily, Get Your Guide provide their partners (that’s me!) with lots of very helpful data on all the best tours across their website, so I’ve used it to create this round-up of the 8 most popular top-rated Belize excursions in 2022. 8. Lamanai Maya Ruins & River Boat Safari w/ Lunch
From: Belize City
For the most chilled of caving Belize excursions, this tour takes you floating down the New River, the same one used by Mayans to travel across the country centuries ago. You’ll go past some small villages and see plenty of wildlife while your tour guide talks you through the local area.
Once you reach the ruins of Lamanai, the historical exploration begins. Named for its substantial population of crocodiles, Lamanai is a particularly exciting archeological site because of the fact that it was the longest-occupied city in Mesoamerica.
Not only will you be taken around the whole site by your guide, but after a picnic lunch you’ll have a chance to see the many artefacts in the museum, too.
Well in case you haven’t clocked it yet, if there’s one thing Belize excursions do well, it’s Mayan ruins! Xunantunich is one of the most popular amongst travellers, and is a stunning introduction into the palaces and temples of this ancient Central American civilisation.
This particular Xunantunich tour is special because it gives you the option of exploring the site by either horseback, cave tubing or river tubing. Either option will put some incredible landscapes filled with stunning flora and fauna in front of your eyes.
The ruins of Caracol are a bit harder to get to than other ancient Mayan sites, but the beauty of this is that they therefore attract far fewer tourists. Going with a small group tour like this one eliminates much of the difficulty of getting there, and guarantees you an excellent 3-hour guided tour of the city.
On the way there, you’ll also visit the Rio Frio cave, and on the way back you can swim in the natural pools around the Big Rock Waterfall.
This is one of the many Belize excursions that require some hiking, so make sure you bring comfortable walking shoes.
This day trip will take you from modern day to ancient history. You’ll begin learning about some of the most fascinating landmarks in Belize City, from the lighthouse to the home of the Prime Minister.
You’ll then jump in a bus to the old trading city of Altun Ha to listen to your guide tell you all about the Mayan history in the area. The ruins of the city were only discovered in the 1960s, but there is so much to see there.
This is without doubt one of the must-do Belize excursions for history-lovers!
Fancy popping over the border to Guatemala for the day? Pack your passport and get yourself onto this top-rated day-trip!
Just a couple of hours away from San Ignacio lies Tikal, an impressive city of Mayan ruins that will have you truly wowed. This tour will take you through the forests, seeing monkeys, macaws, coatís and more in between awe-inspiring ruins of temples, trade houses and palaces.
Lunch, transport and tickets in to the UNESCO world heritage site are included, so the only thing you’ll need to pay for on the day is the border tax of $19 USD.
Oh, I do love a good kayaking trip. This more active of the top Belize excursions will guide you underground through the Nohoch Che’en Caves. You’ll get to stop for a swim in a natural pool, and you’ll see a waterfall, stalagmites and stalactites during your paddles.
Everything is of course provided for you equipment-wise, and you can even choose to kayak solo or in a tandem kayak. This tour ends with a paddle through the jungle, and also has a ziplining add-on if you’re craving a bit more adrenaline.
2. Seven-Stop Snorkeling in the Belize Barrier Reef
From: Caye Caulker
The Belize Barrier Reef is the second biggest in the world. It’s teeming with marine life, from manatees to seahorses to sharks. It’s best of explore the reefs with as few people around you as possible so as not to disturb the wildlife, so this small-group Belize excursion is perfect.
You’ll be taken to 7 incredible stops, including Hol Chan Marine Reserve and a shipwreck, where you’ll have extremely high chances of seeing a wealth of life.
And to top it off, you’ll finish your day with some free GoPro footage of your underwater adventure.
Since you’ll be swimming over the reefs, it’s really important that you wear reef-friendly, biodegradable sun screen for this Belize excursion. All the national park fees are included in the tour price.
It’s really no wonder this is the best-selling of all Get Your Guide’s Belize excursions. The traces left by the Mayans in the ATM caves are fascinating, and the modern-day activities included in the tour make this an easy favourite amongst travellers.
And while this activity is the most must-do of Belize excursions, these particular tour guides absolutely smash the experience out of the park. They’ll take you safely on the hike to the entrance of the caves, provide you with all the right gear for caving, and then guide you from chamber to chamber, teaching you all about the historical artefacts along the way.
There are 5 visible skeletons within the ATM caves, and plenty to learn about ceremonies and rituals of the Mayans, so be prepared to be amazed.
They keep you happy with lunch, snacks, water and rum punch during your experience, too!
That’s the end of my top 8 Belize excursions in 2022; most are small-group tours so definitely book early to avoid disappointment! Picking a few of these tours will give you a greast all-rounder view of the country, and will probably have you returning feeling like an expert on both Mayan history and Central American wildlife!
